There are truly few things as satisfying in life as following your passionate dreams and meeting others along the way who will share your dreams and add their own to make the dream grow into a fabulous reality!

That’s the journey of Durham Family Theatre so far … from our beginning just last fall we’ve already had enough success to affirm the vision of creating a COMMUNITY theatre in Durham, planted in grassroots, nourished by community and reaching for the stars … a community theatre that is honesty diverse in race, class and generations … a theatre that has exciting, high quality shows for audiences of all ages on our three conceptual stages  – CENTER STAGE with shows for teens through adults – ROCK THE BOAT STAGE with shows that will challenge audiences, stretch our minds and hearts and keep us oh so very alive to new understandings – and FAMILY STAGE with shows like our successful first production, “ALICE! a mad musical adventure”, that will entertain and delight ALL ages. And a theatre that is rooted in downtown Durham – the hub of the wheel of vibrant neighborhoods that make up our city – reaching into and being reached by our whole community.

That’s the vision and the opportunity ahead of us. We’ve grown large enough to be seeking a permanent space downtown in which to plant secure roots. We’ve got a program planned for next year that includes three full productions (one for each stage), three concerts in a conversation generating series, fall-winter-spring classes and a summer workshop production. (Details coming soon.)

This week a core group of supporters met with people who are interested in and willing to join our first DFT Board of Directors. (I hope to introduce them to you on this blog by mid-May) In May our new Board and our Advisory Council will meet each other for a day-long planning retreat. So many new visionaries ready to roll up their sleeves and join the effort to make the dream of DFT a reality. We hope you’ll find your own way to join us. All are welcome.

Now I’m off to turn into a fortune teller (Senorita Fortuna) for the Club Blvd. Elementary spring fair this afternoon. Maybe I’ll see you there and we’ll look into the future together.

Warmly, Jenny
