ABOUT DURHAM FAMILY THEATRE: A 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization Durham Family Theatre is a multi-racial, inter-generational, community-based theatre company. We create and present work that tenaciously reflects the rich diversity of Durham, North Carolina. DFT is both a repertory company and arts-education hub, committed to the creative growth of the next generation of young artists. DFT produces original plays/musicals as well as classic theater such as Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” and award winning literature like “The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963,” to serve the artistic growth of our company, students and associates. DFT teaches the pursuit and practice of authentic creative expression and effective storytelling. We train and empower artists of all ages and our active scholarship program encourages under-served communities to participate in the performing arts. DFT believes that theater is a powerful vehicle for intellectual, emotional and ethical growth, and that by telling good stories together we build positive community. We envision DFT as providing a context for diverse communities to purposefully bridge cultural barriers through creative collaboration. At DFT people from various backgrounds have the opportunity to access one another’s experiences by creating transformative and engaging theatre. Through these community efforts, DFT intends to serve as a springboard for members to lead creative lives, develop meaningful relationships, and pursue careers in the arts.
